Annette Oevermann writes: IDT (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, and MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced a partnership to provide Linux® support for IDT’s integrated communications processors targeted for existing and emerging applications including Ethernet switching, gateways, wireless access points and virtual private networks (VPNs).
As the first deliverable of the partnership, the MontaVista? Linux Professional Edition, MontaVista Software?s flagship product, has been initially optimized to support IDT?s RC32334 integrated communications processor and 79S334 evaluation board, with plans to support additional IDT processors. Customers can utilize IDT?s integrated communications processors and the robust and scalable development environment from MontaVista Software to design, develop and deploy their applications.

Building on the success as the leading provider of communications processors in the Ethernet switching market, IDT?s RC32334 integrated communications processor, based on the 32-bit MIPS® instruction set architecture (ISA), is a system-on-a-chip (SOC) solution designed to offer optimal price/performance for emerging embedded applications. The device operates at up to 150 MHz and features an on-chip, industry-standard PCI bridge operating at up to 66 MHz; a flexible memory controller; and standard general-purpose system modules including a DMA controller, interrupt controller and serial ports. The 79S334 evaluation board has multiple PCI slots to allow a variety of off-the-shelf peripherals, such as Ethernet cards, to be used in system design and debug.

“MontaVista Software targets the leading MIPS-based embedded CPUs and boards to meet our customer demands with the scalable and full featured MontaVista Linux,” said John Nielson, director of business development for MIPS architecture at MontaVista Software. “The IDT/MontaVista partnership provides embedded developers with the flexibility and performance of IDT?s integrated communications processors while leveraging all the advantages of a Linux-based development platform.”

“Customers in the highly cost-sensitive applications that IDT?s integrated processors serve are clearly viewing the adoption of Linux as a way to further reduce system costs,” said Sandra Chang, strategic partner program manager for IDT’s integrated communications processors. “Our partnership with MontaVista Software provides OEMs of high-performance communications systems with a high-quality Linux platform for their development and deployment needs, and we look forward to continued support for a range of our integrated communications processors.”

IDT’s Integrated Communications Processors

IDT’s portfolio of integrated communications processors includes the RC32355 and RC32351 processors, as well as the RC32334 and RC32332 devices, and provides designers of communications systems a range of choices as the base for cost-conscious embedded applications.
