The Importance of Valid HPC Business Models

Over at Scalability.org, Joe Landman writes that the recent financial debacle with the Encanto supercomputer in New Mexico shows that it is more important than ever to have a valid business model in today’s HPC market.

University level supercomputing centers are common. State/regional level centers are subject to politics as well as difficult business choices. Some have thrived, even in the face of painful changes (PSC). Others, not so much. Part of it is getting the right leadership to make the hard choices, the right business development team to sell the resources, and the right local/regional climate to encourage usage.
