Nokia announced the availability of the Maemo 5 SDK beta release on Tuesday. In addition to bringing many bugfixes and improvements to the platform, this beta release also marks the official API freeze. This means that the SDK is now ready for all third-party application developers who want to write software for Maemo 5.
Maemo is Nokia’s Linux-based platform for Internet Tablet devices, such as the N810. The new version of the platform was first announced last year at the Open Source in Mobile conference. Nokia intends to deploy the platform on a next-generation Internet Tablet device that will include an OMAP3 processor and 3G Internet connectivity. Maemo 5 is designed to take advantage of the performance boost provided by the OMAP3 processor. Maemo 5 will use the Clutter graphics framework to deliver a richer and more finger-friendly user interface. It also includes new frameworks for hardware management, multimedia, geolocation, and search.
