Everybody moans about VMware prices. I mean, they charge $6,000 for the software you need to virtualize a $3,000 server box. But VMware’s outrageous prices have a silver lining. They provide a generous price umbrella that spurs competition and encourages innovation. After my very interesting chat with Simon Crosby of XenSource a few weeks ago, I had a similar opportunity to talk with the other major independent Xen virtualization vendor, Virtual Iron. Founder Alex Vasilevsky and Chief Marketing Officer Mike Grandinetti were more than willing to explain how they are taking advantage of VMware’s price umbrella.
