BitNami makes it easier than ever to discover, install and configure Open Source applications.

The BitNami team has just announced the launch of www.bitnami.org, built to help spread the adoption of freely available, high quality open source web applications. BitNami Stacks are downloadable, ready-to-run packages that make it easy to get started with open source applications by automating the installation and configuration process. This allows even non-technical users to be up and running with the software in under five minutes. BitNami currently hosts Stacks for blogging, bug-tracking, ECM, forums, portals, wikis and more.

Available BitNami Stacks include DokuWiki, Drupal, Joomla!, KnowledgeTree, Liferay, Mantis, MediaWiki, Opina, phpBB, Redmine, Roller, Trac, WordPress with others like Alfresco and Moodle coming soon.

BitNami Stacks run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and several Solaris Stacks will be released over the coming months. Each Stack is released as open source under the terms of the Apache 2.0 License, allowing users to download and use the Stacks free of charge. BitNami users and visitors select which Stacks and software combinations will be released through polls and forums hosted on BitNami.org.

“With more than 100 posts in the forums in just a few short weeks, we’re already starting to build a community around BitNami.” says Antonio Santos, forum moderator and developer for BitNami, “We have already released specific stacks such as Trac, based on the site polls and feedback from our early users.”

BitNami also offers infrastructure Stacks, including LAMP (Apache, MySQL and PHP for Linux), MAMP (AMP for Mac OS X), WAMP (AMP for Windows) and Ruby. These Stacks provide developers with easy to install distributions of the open source software many web applications require to run.

John Conroy, a journalist for CMSWire, was happy to hear about the BitNami project after struggling to get web-based open source software installed and configured. “When I first heard about the whole ‘open-source’ thing, I wanted to hug the guy who thought of it. Full power, enterprise-level software power for free?” he said. “Several hours later, still rummaging around with my FTP client, slashing at my host’s server, I wanted to chop his head off. What a shame that no one has thought of automating the deployment process so that non-technical users can actually get their system up and running. Oh wait, BitNami just did.”

BitNami Stacks can be downloaded from www.bitnami.org/stacks. Users can provide feedback and suggestions by visiting www.bitnami.org/forums.

About BitNami

The purpose of BitNami.org is to increase the adoption of open source software. Each BitNami Stack contains an open source application and all the software required to run, wrapped in an easy to use installer. This allows users to get up and running with open source in under five minutes. BitNami Stacks are independent, self-contained and relocatable, making distribution and deployment on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux a snap.
