Google’s browser-centric Chrome OS hasn’t reached the market yet, but development is progressing and the platform is attracting the interest of a growing number of hardware makers. Although the operating system was principally designed for netbooks, Google has also discussed some opportunities for bringing it to other kinds of devices, including ARM-based smartbooks and tablets.
Google’s operating system uses a Linux kernel that’s partly based on the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, and the source code of the Chrome OS Linux kernel is published in a git repository at src.chromium.org. Some of the recent changes that are landing in the public source code repository suggest that there could be some ARM-based devices among the first products that are destined to ship with Chrome OS.
