Overall, despite significant contributions from “embedded” factions like Renesas (Super-Hitachi), Movial, Freescale, Marvell, MontaVista, Nokia, and Simtec, the LF’s “Who Writes Linux” study shows that enterprise-oriented companies focused on the x86 architecture continue to drive the bulk of Linux development.
However, much of the work done by the likes of Red Hat, IBM, Novell, Intel, and Oracle stands to benefit the Moblin project, which aims to leverage mature, well-tested x86 software, along with UI innovations, in emerging device sectors like netbooks, MIDs, automotive, and videophones.
