SUNNYVALE, April 22, 2003 MontaVista Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced IBM® WebSphere® Studio Device Developer 5.0 for MontaVista® Linux® Professional Edition 3.0.

MontaVista will demonstrate this offering, complete with templates to build applications on a wide variety of devices, in booth #2210 at the Embedded Systems Conference, San Francisco, April 23-25, 2003.

As computing extends more and more from PCs and laptops into the multi-platform device arena, developers need to run their applications on a range of different operating systems – especially embedded Linux. IBM and MontaVista Software have worked together to combine IBM’s Java expertise with MontaVista Software’s platform expertise, said Michael Karasick, director of Embedded Development, IBM Pervasive Computing Division. MontaVista Software offers a complete, fully-tested Java development and runtime product for a broad range of reference hardware platforms.

WebSphere Studio Device Developer for MontaVista Linux is a premier development and deployment solution for building embedded Java® applications for the new generation of smart devices. In addition to the WSDD® Integrated Development Environment (IDE), this new product provides two Java runtime environments. To meet the latest J2ME specifications designed for the wide variety of consumer device solutions based on Java, WSDD incorporates the WebSphere Micro Environment, a certified J2ME runtime environment. For extended flexibility, it also includes the WebSphere Custom Environment to provide a customizable runtime environment that can be tailored to the specific needs of a particular embedded device.

MontaVista Software builds, tests and supports these Java runtime environments for the broadest range of embedded platforms in the industry including x86/IA-32, PowerPC, MIPS, Hitachi SuperH, ARM, Intel XScale and StrongARM.

Today, the trend is to use Java for embedded applications on all types of devices, added Michael Mathews, product marketing manager, MontaVista Software. The evolution of the J2ME standards is enabling an ever wider application of this technology. Customers want to use Java to create applications that can be implemented and extended on several platforms. The combination of MontaVista Linux and these powerful, flexible Java technologies allows developers to successfully design and develop the next generation of embedded systems applications, delivering high reliability and availability.

WebSphere Studio Device Developer for MontaVista Linux provides complete support of the key Java features including compiler optimization with JIT and AOT compilers, native system access with a full JNI implementation, RMI for remote method services in networked applications, and OSGi support for post-deployment remote device updates. In addition, data base access, Java Beans, and Java Real Time extensions are available. MontaVista implements support for all platform dependent functionality, including graphics, flash management and serial I/O. AWT and MIDP provide standard graphics support for better interoperability, and proprietary small footprint/high performance graphics options are also available for special requirements. Support for execution from flash provides a way to save memory and improve performance.

Availability

WebSphere Studio Device Developer for MontaVista Linux will be available as a pre-built and certified product on all MontaVista Linux Professional
Edition 3.0 platforms from MontaVista Software and the company’s sales and distribution channels worldwide, in the second quarter of 2003. In the future, WebSphere Studio Device Developer for MontaVista Linux will also be available as an additional offering to subscribers of the companys Consumer Electronics Edition.

Previously, MontaVista Software distributed an earlier version of Java, VisualAge® Micro Edition (VAME) 1.4 from IBM. WebSphere Studio Device Developer replaces VAME. MontaVista Software will continue to provide support for VAME 1.4 for MontaVista Linux to MontaVista customers currently using MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 2.1.
