“The DVD shop created by MySQL is the hands-down winner of the performance crown,” the magazine summarizes. “It clearly demonstrates the capabilities of a carefully configured MySQL/PHP application.” The MySQL DVD online store was able to process 3,664 orders per minute (opm). If a second computer had been used, the figure would have gone up to 6,000 opm, showing that MySQL is highly suitable for business use.
c´t draws additional conclusions: “MySQL is obviously by far the most popular database among developers.” More than half of the solutions submitted were created using MySQL. No database product by any other manufacturer was listed more than once among working solutions. Of the well-known brands, DB2 Express (1,537 opm) and Oracle Express (1,412 opm) placed seventh and eighth. Fellow open source database PostgreSQL ranked thirteenth, with 120 opm.
“We’re very proud of the outstanding success our benchmark team has achieved — showing how fast MySQL can be for everyday, transaction-intensive tasks,” said Robin Schumacher, director of product management for MySQL AB. “The performance edge of the MySQL entry is a testament to their skills and the product itself. These results show the power of MySQL in an affordable scaled-out Web environment – whether developers choose to ‘do-it-themselves’, or take advantage of MySQL’s own world-class in-house expertise and professional services.”
c’t is regarded as Germany’s most comprehensive source of information for computer professionals and power users. The bi-weekly magazine publishes more than 380,000 copies per issue and has a very popular Web site, especially within the open source community.
