Registries offended by domain sales

CNET News.com reports that VeriSign will halt some auctions of domain name related to last Tuesday’s terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. In the days after the tradgedy, businesses and individuals rushed to register a variety of names such as 09112001.com and Worldtradecenterdisaster.com. VeriSign’s policy seems to be “ban anything referring to the attack,” and their actions may have included decommissioning the domain names of sites intended as memorials. Other registries, including Register.com, say they will not revoke registrations based solely on the name of a site.
