Even if you’re too old for trick-or-treating this Halloween, you can still get in the spirit of things with these free software games, tools, and applications. Why should kids get to have all the fun?
- KDE-Look.org has loads of Halloween themes to dress up your desktop. Some are funny, some are creepy, and all are easy to install.
- GNOME-Look.org doesn’t have quite as many selections to choose from, but if you have something specific in mind you can always make your own.
- Want to customize your Firefox browser? Use these themes to turn your toolbar icons into witches, pumpkins, and more.
- WordPress users will also find a few themes to trick out their blogs: haunted houses, witches, a cauldron, and a pumpkin ready for its close-up are just a few of the designs available.
- If you spend the day communicating with others online using AIM for Linux, then you have a few options. Pidgin users are out of luck, but they can always make their own smileys.
- Use the free music player Amarok to play spooky music and weird sound effects. Download legally free Halloween tunes from Oddio Overplay or warble your own by turning your Linux PC into a karaoke machine. Share your holiday spirit and unnerve the neighbors with free creepy sound effects from ScarySpookySounds.com.
- No Halloween is complete unless you scare yourself silly with a few free horror flicks from the Internet Archives. Stream movies right from the site or use the free VLC media player to watch films like the 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead,” Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, or the Bela Lugosi fright flick Scared to Death.
- If you want to go all out, download Evil Entity Linux for the ultimate Halloween tribute.
Now you’re ready to enjoy Halloween open source-style. Kick back, wait for the trick-or-treaters to come to your door, and be sure to hand out live CDs of your favorite distro flavor to all the moms and dads.
