With this agreement in place, Unisys can provide a broad range of consulting, integration and support services for the MySQL® database product family, including MySQL Network subscriptions, MySQL Cluster and associated products. The new solution offering for MySQL strengthens Unisys rich services capabilities for open source stacks such as LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl).
Unisys open source database consulting services for MySQL and other open source database systems provide public- and private- sector organizations with migration, high-availability architecture and design, performance optimization and tuning, administration and management across the open source stack.
“Combining Unisys services with MySQL’s popular database software can help our joint customers attain the flexibility in IT deployment and operational benefits that open source technology can deliver,” said Ulf Sandberg, vice president of Customer Services for MySQL AB. “By leveraging Unisys proven experience in global IT consulting and management, we can help these users integrate software more easily, significantly lower their overall IT costs, and focus on creating value for their core business.”
Teaming Facilitates Lower-Cost, Disciplined Integration of Open Source Technology
Keeping the cost of database infrastructure low as transaction volumes grow exponentially is an increasingly pressing challenge for enterprises. Every IT manager must confront the necessity to do more with less as they continue migrating mission-critical business operations online and invest in next-generation Web 2.0 applications. Traditional IT organizations are beginning to see the benefits of shifting to increasingly mature open architecture technologies after years of deploying complex and expensive infrastructure software on proprietary Unix machines.
“Unisys and MySQL share a commitment to enabling enterprises with complex database requirements to implement open source solutions with maximum speed and payback at minimal cost,” said Anthony Gold, vice president and general manager, Open Source Business, Unisys. “Combining Unisys consulting and integration services with the powerful MySQL software, we can help clients take the disciplined approach required to implement high-performance open source database solutions that can scale to meet the most demanding enterprise business needs.”
Unisys intends to tune and optimize MySQL for Unisys platforms, completing both performance and scalability testing along with MySQL developers. Additionally, Unisys intends to deploy a global team of MySQL-certified consultants who can migrate, implement and optimize MySQL throughout an enterprise. The Unisys consultants will be key members of Unisys global open source centers of excellence, where customers can benchmark and test business-critical applications employing the database in a lab environment before moving them into production.
Unisys has made an intensive commitment to providing a comprehensive, secure, integrated open source software stack comprising Linux operating environments, middleware, and database management systems such as MySQL. Unisys services for the open source environment help organizations maximize the benefits of open source software at all key levels – business applications, applications infrastructure and technology infrastructure – and integrate components being developed by open source communities into value-creating business applications.
Open Source Crucial for SOAs
Unisys views open source technologies as a critical building block in the development of open Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) strategies. SOA is a rapidly growing enterprise IT strategy that composes the discrete functions contained in legacy applications, databases and enterprise software solutions into interoperable, standards-based services that can be integrated and assembled quickly to meet changing business requirements. Unisys has been systematically developing the methodology for architecting, governing and implementing this open SOA under its 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) approach for several years.
Unisys objective is to help clients realize the benefits of secure business operations that can result from using solutions based on leading open source technology– lower cost of solution deployment and ownership, greater agility in IT management, improved operational efficiency and competitive advantage.
