The Mako Analysis report says that open source mobile platforms, such as Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Series 60, and open source operating systems like Symbian , Palm and Linux will give users the flexibility to find other ways of getting new content into their phones without using normal operator channels. The examples it gives include downloading messaging applications from third party sites and gaining either free or cheap access to Java games from independent distributors. The analysts also highlight the ability of new smartphones to store, large MP3 files in the phone memory card, allowing music and other multimedia content to be transferred from a desktop via a USB cable.
