Embedded Linux company TimeSys opens Japan office

CNet reports that TimeSys, a seller of Linux for cars and consumer electronics, has opened a Japanese office. ”
Embedded Linux companies such as TimeSys, MontaVista Software, LynuxWorks and
Lineo are pushing the comparatively new operating system into a growing class of
’embedded’ devices.”

Zelerate kicks off Open Source e-commerce education program

exploited by local users to run arbitrary commands as root if the
machine is running a kernel with kmod enabled.

The kmod kernel feature allows the kernel to dynamically load kernel
modules if functionality is required that is not present in the running
kernel.”

EuroLinux Petition reaches 55,000 signatures

From LinuxPR: The Diplomatic Conference to revise the
European Patent Convention has started today in Munich. A key issue during this
conference relates to the extension of the patent system to software in Europe.
For obvious reasons related to its financial structure, the European Patent Office
favours an extension of the patent system to software. However 55,000 citizens,
including 2000 corporate executives, have signed so far the EuroLinux Petition to
protect software innovation in Europe. 200 European companies are sponsoring
the EuroLinux petition and more than 100 companies have publicly voiced out
their opinion.

Open Source development lab should open by end of year

ComputerWorld reports on the lab, saying the first independent Open Source Development Lab is on track to open by the end of the year. “Announced in August by a group of corporate backers including Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Intel
Corp. and NEC Corp., the multimillion-dollar lab is envisioned as a place where Linux and other
open-source developers from around the world can have free and easy access to some of the
latest and fastest computer hardware for code testing and collaboration.”
