Sony to power Vaio notebooks with Transmeta chip

Sony Corp. will use processors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Transmeta Corp. in certain models of its popular Vaio notebook PCs due out by year’s end, the EE Times reported. Sony expects to sell two million Vaio notebooks this fiscal year, double last year’s unit sales, said a company spokesman.

Transmeta hopes to raise $200 million in IPO

One of the chip maker’s biggest investors includes Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, whose Vulcan Ventures investment vehicle currently holds a 7 percent stake equal to 3,954,333 shares, Reuters reports. Transmeta, based in Santa Clara, Calif., has applied for a Nasdaq listing under the symbol “TMTA” and will have the IPO jointly managed by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Deutsche Banc Alex Brown.

Captive chimps seek cooking lessons

From a BBC story: A group of captive chimps in Spain have started to purée their food. This is the first known case of chimps preparing food purely to please their palettes. “They’ve started this behaviour in this case because they’re captive and have more time and are bored,” said chimp expert Dr. Jane Goodall.
