R.I.P. is another excellent item to have in your toolbox. This is a fully-functional GNU/Linux operating system that works on a “live” type CD or from a thumb drive. R.I.P. was created and is maintained by Kent Robotti. It is based on Slackware Linux.
What’s it for? Well, it’s not your standared recovery type app. Most of those are just apps that run from a bootable CD. This application is a functioning GNU/Linux operating system, as stated above. It is loaded with many applications that you would need for troubleshooting and repairs of a system:
– editors
– partitioning tools
– Firefox browser to access information online while attempting repairs
– mail capabilities
– graphics tools
… and much more!
You can grab a copy of R.I.P. at this website: http://www.tux.org/pub/people/kent-robotti/looplinux/rip/ While you’re there, check out the screenshots.
Once you download and md5sum check, just burn it to CD like you would any other live distro iso. R.I.P. ran flawlessly on my system from the initial boot-up. I’m sure it will on yours also. It’s got Slackware under the hood, after all.
There are different versions for different purposes on that site. Read before downloading. Also, you’ll find Kent’s R.I.P. documentation there. Read the fine manual. š You’ll find out how to change kernels and where to see the entire installed package list, etc. Good stuff!
Until next time…
